Yes.

Whatever is available for Linux.  I've tried mplayer and xine, and ended up
configuring MythDVD to use xine because mplayer knows nothing about DVD
menus.

mplayer and xine appear to be evenly matched as far as performance and
stability go.  The main differentiating factor I see between them is that
menus work in xine, but not in mplayer.

There shouldn't be, if your hardware works properly.  (Double-sided and
single-sided DVDs shouldn't look any different to the DVD-ROM drive when they're
loaded up anyway.  Dual-layer DVDs are theoretically more difficult to read,
but in practice, if your drive has trouble reading them, it's broken.)
