That DVI is digital and analog :-)

DVI cables and devices can contain and use either digital, analog or both.

DVI analog is roughly equivalent to VGA, and so the adpter you describe just
feeds the analog signal.

However, what we're all interested in is the digital signal. And most
HDTVs actually only want the digital signal on their DVI port because
they already have component video for analog. It would be useful to
use the DVI-A channel if the TV supported it, since it's RGB, but mainly
people want DVI because it's digital.

Because the computer of course has the signal in digital form and the
non-CRT HDTVs all want it in digital form, so it's silly to convert it
to analog and back to digital -- we want to go digital all the way.

So far I have not found the magic combination:
Nvidia open source drivers not powerful enough for 1080i
Nvidia closed drivers have bug with 1080i
Radeon drivers can't do more than 1600 wide.
Radeon drivers invert the colours (though some folks report this
may just be a tint signed/unsigned bug in myth)
Unichrome drivers have problems with 1080i
IEG drivers won't go 1920 wide.

I keep hunting...
