I'm thinking about switching to satellite (probably DishNet possibly
DirectTV) I was wondering do these boxes have firewire

No, and I have been looking hard and wanting much (like my english?). I have Directv, but the same applies to Dish. The only fireware satellite receivers I have been able to find (and there are a few of them) are SDTV only.

or are they also
required to do that?

Nope, sorry.

If not, is there another way to directly capture
the digital data from a satellite feed w/o a conversion to analog first?

169time.com

I've searched the archives and it seems like the most recent discussions
about this were some time ago when the answer was no, has this changed
with the FCC ruling on firewire?

The FCC ruling on Firewire only affects HDTV cable boxes. It doesn't apply to satellite at all (unfortunately).
