Allow me to add my "welcome aboard!"

The only thing I'd add to what's already been said is that I think you'll 
benefit from learning about shell scripts (think "batch files" if you played 
with those in DOS/Windows) and either Perl or Python. You don't need to be a 
professional programmer, but enough familiarity to be able to follow the 
logic of stuff you'll come across will be helpful.

The O'Reilly books are very good, or Google for tutorials and/or howtos on:
 * the Bash shell and shell scripts
 * Perl and/or Python
