Tom:
Thanks for the suggestion but I don't believe I am using XvMC - I don't think ATI currently support it (can't see a mention on the Rage3D forums).
I looked through the 'extremely choppy video' thread again, as I did a few days back, but could not really see anything of use. Except perhaps the post:
"I had this exact problem when playing the sound through ALSA dmix.
I workarounded it by using the actual ALSA hardware device instead. "
Any idea how I can check this? My output is set to ALSA:default and mixer=default is this correct?
I will try the video as timeline option tonight. I have already tried turning off priority threads and the chmod a+s.
Graham

The only way I got rid of this was to disable XvMC. It doubled my CPU usage, but at least it worked. If you aren't using that, then I can't help you....there was a thread a couple of weeks ago that had a bunch of stuff to try, check the archives.Hi,
I had posted this to the Knoppmyth forums but have since found that the problem 'seems' to be related to the DMA (PCI) audio and the saa7134 cards (so I have posted here in hopes of a wider audience and hopefully a solution!).
When using the line out on one PCTV card I do not get the frequent 'prebuffering pauses' (only the occasional one I can live with!)
