It's slightly complicated, but definitely still doable, more so than
just installing from tarballs.

The short version is that you'll want to create a "portage overlay"
where you copy ebuilds that you download yourself. You set up portage
to look in this local overlay first, and then all you have to do is
type "emerge mythtv-cvs" (or whatever your custom ebuild names are) to
install them.

bugs.gentoo.org is a good place to find bleeding edge ebuilds:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66337 (for mythtv-cvs ebuilds)

forums.gentoo.org is a good place to search for how to set up a
portage overlay. It's not much more complicated than making a
/usr/local/portage directory and putting some files in it, but you'll
want to read up on it before attempting it
