I got the freezing problem solved:
It turns out that in setup, the video source was set (innocuously) to 'television'. When I switched it to tuner0, hey presto, no freezing.
Unfortunately, I can't switch channels. Haven't looked in just why yet since I'm away from that machine, but I've seen other posts about this.
