The PVR250/350 is MPEG2, not MPEG4 as the poster asked.

This is a P4-2GHz.
Playback of the resulting file uses around 20-30%
So it is my experience that transcoding is not realtime on my PC, but
playback is. Recording from raw frames to MPEG4 might be easier on the
PC than transcoding.
