Hi Mark, In a nutshell, MySQL client lib is needed.
I've done just that yesterday to run the frontend on my rebuilt PC in the office. (Dropped Mandrake, gone FC3.) I compiled MythTV from the 0.17 source, but had to install the MySQL RPM (qt-MySQL-3.3.4-0.fc3.0) as without it myfrontend can't connect to the server.
