Thanks to all who replied for the details of your experiences. From them, I can see that "patience" is the word for me. I'll wait until after moving to a 2.6.12 kernel before adding an HD-3000.
After re-reading all the replies, I feel lucky to have avoided some unpleasant experiences trying to force-fit the HD-3000 into the 2.6.11 kernel.
