When logged in to mysql as root. try the following (if you haven't already): mysql> SELECT Host, User FROM mysql.user WHERE User='mythtv'; This should give you an idea of whether mysql will let the mythtv user log in to the DB, and from which IP/hosname. If your machine has changed IP or hostname, this could be the cause.
