The e-build I use (it's kind of old... it sits in my overlay directory) automatically copies them to /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mythweb The only things you will have to configure are the conf/config.php files and getting apache to have php_mod working. To do that in gentoo, all you need to do is add APACHE2_OPTS="-D PHP4" or APACHE2_OPTS="-D PHP5" (depending on your version of mod_php) in /etc/conf.d/apache2.
