In addition to DVDs (for which Jon's command below works well), I sometimes play VCDs.  The following command works for VCDs by automatically loading the playlist/tracks:

xine -pfhq --auto-scan vcdo

I also use Xine for MythVideo, as suggested by Jarod.  For this you can use:

xine -pfhq --no-splash %s

If it's not installed already you will need to install it.

I use this command:

xine -pfhq --no-splash dvd://
