I used the internal player for a long time but finally switched back to using Xine. It is buggy and not being actively developed at the moment.
It does have some benefits such as using the same key-bindings and the transition when starting is smoother than Xine. For me there are playback and navigation issues which just made it too frustrating. No menu support does mean that you sometimes get stuck with the wrong track.
