What depth wall are we talking about here?  If it is a 2x6 wall, you could get some nice looking and nice sounding bookself speakers and build a small recess into the wall for them.  Or just build in a recess for some satelitte type speakers.

Alternatively, you could go all recuctio ad absurdum on her and say you don't want any visible lights, switches, or recpetacles, either!

I'm also under the impression that "enclosure less drivers" suck.  Unfortunately in this home renovation form comes before function.  I'm going for the Wife Acceptance Factor.

In wall speakers tend to be less small because, well, they still don't
takeup any space.

Perhaps you could go with standard in wall speakers but make custom grilles
that are more attractive than the factory option?

I find AVSForums.com to be totally unintelligible, so I am asking here.
Does anyone have any suggestions for speakers that can be totally hidden
inside a wall and painted? I'm looking for small speakers that my wife
won't hate.

Why is it that Bose can use those tiny little cube speakers for there
flag ship product, but their in-wall speakers have to have a 8 3/4" by
6" face plate?
Parts express (www.partsexpress.com) has some fairly small speakers..
small cube speakers suck. Esp. Bose speakers. Properly designed small cube
speakers take lots of R&D resources to create and cost a lot of money, In
wall speakers already have gone through a lot of R&D resources just to get an
enclosure less driver to sound right. Most people that are going to use in
wall speakers don't care to save that little bit of size so the manufacturers
are willing to put normal drivers in them and spend the R&D resources getting
normal sized drivers to sound good in an in wall package.

Now, I've seen some in-wall's with nice quality grill plates, solid white or
black (which can then be painted to match any wall color). But your going to
need to cut a hole in the wall and place a grill over the drivers, so I don't
really see what more you expect?
