pnsclient does work on Win2003 SP1 boxes, you just need to disable DEP for pnsclient.exe.
NSClient++ (http://nscplus.medin.name/index.php/Main_Page) looks good and works for me for what I want to do (and saves me from having to have nrpe_nt installed as well). Clientless? Spend aeons figuring out how to use SNMP queries to get the info, bash your head against countless brick walls, give up, and install a client.
