I went through the same thing. I wrote to the packager (dag wieers) and he told me that the defauld is broken in the source. run nagios -v /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg and you'll see what's wrong. To all: BTW, is it the case also with the source install? If yes, would it be possible to fix it so that one can install, then start the service and have a working config doing only local checks?
