After playing around with Nagios 2.6 and the latest plugins (1.4.5) I found a little inaccuracy in the text displayed in the check_ping plugin.
For the plugin, consider the command: /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -p 3 -t 10 -4 -H 10.100.9.201 -w 1000,20% -c 2000,50% This works. Take the percentage sign off the "critical" indicator so it reads "-c 2000,50" - and you get: check_ping: %s: Warning threshold must be integer or percentage! ... displayed in the plugin status for Nagios. However the error is on the "critical" threshold not the warning threshold.
