I am running the service as root. Root is the owner of /var/log, and everything 
in that directory.

Yes, I do see the traps in the syslog. I also changed the severity level to 
debug and still nothing. Once I start creating these logs, I would like to 
focus on Nagios and work on some notification.

Attached is what I'm seeing in my syslog.

Are the permissions on your log directory set properly for the user
snmptt runs as to write the logs?
