Nagios sets and keeps this acknowledgement state in memory only when it receives the external command (until it may get dumped to retention file if you have that enabled). Theoretically, you may be able to periodically stop your backup nagios, copy over the retention file and comments file, overwriting the ones it would already have, and restart nagios.
