The MIBs aren't required to get the data but are needed to represent it properly (print text OIDs, show a text status instead of plain integers where it applies, represent properly IP Addresses, render tables, etc.). Again, you shouldn't need MIBs to handle traps if you're willing to deal with numeric data, although most of the work can be done automatically using the MIBs with SNMPTT and SNMPTTCONVERTMIB.
