Have a look at the sample mysql configs that come w/ the mysql-server package (/usr/share/doc/mysql-server-<version>, on Red Hat and friends, at least). You could use/adapt one of the configs intended for larger environments, depending on your configuration. If nothing else, that's a good starting point. I'd also recommend checking out http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/, particularly the section on performance presentations.
