That depends on your definition of client. Without any sort of program answering questions at all you won't be able to monitor anything but network services. NRPE, SNMP, NSClient, NSClient++, NC.NET, ssh or some other means of accessing the server is necessary to get disk-usage and other data that servers do not publicly advertise.
