bingo! That seems to be the way it works. I would have hoped that anything that could have hostgtroup_members would act the same way and use the same code. Perhaps an oversight easily handled?
I *CAN* use a template and include it in service/serviceescalation definitions that does essentially the same thing, but I'd rather not have a superfluous link to a definition that really shouldn't be needed.
