You cannot apply contactgroups to a hostgroup. You used to be able to
do so long ago but that was abandoned in favor of the greater
flexibility of applying contacts per host{} and templates.

That's pretty much what I thought (at least about not being able to do it), but it's always nice to have confirmation. I guess if I work it right though, it should still only be a single line added, that being the contact group. Thanks.
