I wouldn't say this is better ... just different.

You might instead consider setting up a repeating scheduled outage for
those services.  You'll find various tools to help you do this
on Nagios Exchange.  The one I use (and would heartily recommend) is
http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Addons/Scheduled-Downtime/downtime_sched/details
