I've just run some simple tests and I can confirm that this is broken  
in 3.1.2. I've also taken a quick look at the code and don't see an  
obvious (to me) assignment to the macro array but my C-fu can be weak.  
I'm leaning toward bug but I would encourage you to bring this to the  
nagios-devel list if you get no further responses here.
