I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem, no. Take a look at the nagios log file which is probably /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log Don't forget my earlier recommendation to validate the Nagios config like so: /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg Did you try that, and if so what did it say?
