Hi, I had a similar problem on a centos6/64bits platform, but the ./configure showed me the following :
Can't locate ExtUtils/Embed.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib64/perl5 /usr/local/share/perl5 /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 .). BEGIN failed--compilation aborted. I then just installed perl-ExtUtils-Embed and ruled out the problem. hope it helps.
