My DH had bought me a GC last mother's day and I had yet to use it..so I bit the bullet and went. I say that because I used to work there...in fact it was the 1st place I ever worked at as a nail tech. ...and I was bad back then! The owner had me use barbicide in the pedi tub...we used a heated container to "sterilize" the implements...and only had an inch of barbicide in the little glass on the table....which is still there. The GC was for a mani, pedi, hair, makeup and a mini facial and a mini massage...oh and a small lite lunch. I told them I did not want a pedi or mani when I booked it...I explained I really didn't have nails yet etc etc....I also skipped the hair and make-up. Basically I only wanted a massage and a facial and then I would use the remainder of the money next time...she said ok...she would run it by the boss later. ok...the facial and the massage were ok...together it took 1 1/2 hours...most of that was a massage...it was done at the same time..by 1 tech. She also did my pedi... which I came unprepared for because I really didn't want one...(I did not bring my pedi slippers) so I asked for a pair of disposable pedi slippers....didn't have them...they had a pair of "real" flip flops..kinda like material ones that they used to sell..only 1 pair size 8 ...I ama size 10 shoe...ok whatever..but I didn't like the fact that someone else probably used them but they looked new sooo...I used them. The tech started my pedi... I looked at the implement tray and saw a very old, very horrible looking orangewood stick..looked like they stirred black paint with both ends.... and then she picked it up to use it to push back my cuticles! NO...no no I told her ...and proceeded with my broken spanish, because she hardly spoke english... "no, no, por favor no usa esta!" she immedistely picked up the other cuticle pusher...the flat square ended metal one. OK it has a chance to be cleaner, I thought. Then she used a pumice sponge on my soles and heels.... very little..."crap" I am thinking...pumice sponges are not allowed in NY...and neither are the used files that looked dirty... well all I can say is thank god the pedi was short.... the polish job was bad also and of course I don't have that color here...oh and they had hardly any polish to choose from...and what they had was Brucci and Sally hansen and Revlon....maybe 2 OPI's and 1 china glaze...and THIS my friends is a Day Spa in the Marriott Hotel! I have 25.00 left on the GC..why? I think I should have more ...DH paid 225.00 for this! I didn't even get my lite lunch! NSS...yep definitely! Pati 'Good friends are like stars... Sorry Pati. Thanks for correcting me. Also, I personally have nevr lost a client because some reporter has had a segment on TV radio or written an article about the horrors of nail services. I myself have trie always to provide safe services for my clients and as a CEU Educator for the state of Indiana (before our governor discontinued the classes) tried to teach safe services to the beauty professionals in the class. Just yesterday I read a post ( I don't remember who wrote it) about non asian nss salons using inferior products and performing unsafe services with dirty implements and filthy dirty tables and pedicures chairs. In cases like that YES clients can have problems. What to do about that? PANDORA'S BOX......WOW! Dr Oz, You have no idea what a can of worms you opened. Guys, one of good friends and also a client, husband is an attorney. I can ask him for an opinion. I am all for contacting Dr Oz and his staff letting all of them know what a HUGH mistake they all made with this segment. As you all know, this is not the first time our services have recieved a bad rap on TV and in written publication. We ALL need to take a stand here. What SHOULD we do? I don't want to be a kazillionaire. But I do think it's important for the show to be held accountable for fraudulent reporting. It's been my understanding for the entirety of my career that acetone has long been deemed safe for use in removal of nail polish and nail products and should not cause health concerns for anyone in the salon when used as intended. Natural nails are not made of Styrofoam. And, as I pointed out, there are many substances that dissolve in various solutions ie, sugar in water. Dr. Oz's "demonstration" was ludicrous, at best. Misleading at least, and defamatory at worst. I don't care if he has an audience and/or following that is sufficient to do significant damage to our industry, I care that he recklessly misinformed his audience. If even one person who saw that show now believes that acetone will "melt" the nails off their hands because of what he did/said on the show, damage was done. It's irresponsible reporting and I believe the show and Dr. Oz need to be held accountable for it. Does anyone have a lawyer? We don't need to file a lawsuit (although it's entirely possible that an "unfair competition" suit might apply) but a well-worded letter from a VERY serious source might result in some back-peddling. At this point I cannot take any new clients so I am not too worried about the impact this one show will have with business. I believe that since we are all educated Nail Techs we can correct any misgivings that anyone has from watching this Dr Oz Episode. It is still fun to dream for one minute that we can sue the show and become instant ka-zillionaires! The only thing is we would have to lose a BIG part of our business. Oprah said on her show something to the effect of the mad cow making her not want to eat meat again. It was an IMMEDIATE drop in beef sales. Not sure Dr Oa carries the clout that Oprah does. Yet anyway!!! LOL. We just have to explain it to our clients. Also, write a letter to him like Alice did. Be professional. (I will proofread if you like) you want NO grammatical or typo errors. We can make an impact!!
