On the 3g iPad you are actually paying for mobile data which is a little
different from WiFi. WiFi is built in to all iPads and can be used in a
public hotspot, usually free.

3g data is the same as what's built in to a cell phone and allows you to
access the internet with a cell phone "modem". You pay for that coverage
just like you pay for an additional cell phone, but because it's all data,
its more expensive. (On some plans, an additional phone can be $10 or $20,
whereas the data-only devices are $30 or more)

Alternatively, you can make your cell phone a WiFi hotspot, or you can carry
an additional device that actually is a WiFi hotspot, like a MiFi, these
options usually run $30 a month (some are $60 for unlimited use).

With a rooted Android device (think "hacked" or "jaklbroken"), you can make
your device a WiFi hotspot for free, eliminating the additional $30 per
month cost. This is an advanced tech process and you must be willing to hack
your device.

just went out and purchased a router, attached it to the modum (sp?), and
entered the security code and wala! Wifi. I don't pay a monthly fee to have
wifi, and I have it both at home and at the salon. Both places have internet
supplied by the local cable company. The only expense was purchasing the
router. Just curious... Doesn't make sense that you would have to pay for
wifi that you are providing.

That's just my choice. You could pay less for the iPad with wifi only, then
put wifi in the salon and still pay about the same monthly fee for the wifi
as 3G.

until its time to. Anyway, just a thought.Trish
