Hahhaha Diana...I was thinking this is exACTly the kind of course we all need...but who would go? I've thought about writing a sort of "salon ownership for dummies" kind of book. (Of course, I couldn't call it that...that's copyrighted, I'm sure.) Thought about making it in notebook form with lots of white space to make your own notes. There are lots of other topics...inventory control, "free" marketing opportunities, motivational training for your staff...etc.

Karen...from Fort Myers, FL now!

Sheri, of course this will be boring, cause all of you know I am all
about the laws/rules/government bull crap.
Everyone in our industry are creative people. We don't wanna deal
with the "facts of life", but maybe if these "facts" were taught,
maybe more would stay in the industry and stay successful.

Taxes. No one is taught this. It is a part of our business. Still,
many don't even know how to read their a pay check stub. They have
no idea what is taken out, what is mandatory with a paycheck stub,
how will they know when they become an owner of their own business
(boothrenter/independant contractor), how in the hell can they pay
their own if they don't understand their bottom line.

Social Security/medicare. They see it taken out of their paychecks,
but do they realize that the employer also pays the exact amount and
sends it off to the government in their name, and this is what they
will get back when they retire. So the big bad owner according to
these employees are rich and "taking" their money, when in fact, the
owner is putting money aside for them.
But also, the boothrenter/IC, doesn't wanna pay their taxes, so they
"hide" their money and don't report it. SURPRISE, when they retire,
they find out oops, I don't get a check every month, I thought I
automatically get one. NOPE, all those years you didn't pay, you
don't get crap.

Credit Card/Banking. You don't realize how many new girls have no
idea how to use one for their business. And then if they do accept
credit/debit cards, then don't report these on their taxes, and then
are surprised how did the government find out about that
anyway.(Credit cards report this to them)

Boothrent contracts. Have no idea what is good or not. How Owners
take advantage of the new girls. How boothrenters think that they
should get maternity leave, sick leave etc. No basic concept on the
Owners part OR the boothrenters part. No basic understanding of the
IRS and Labor Laws.

State Laws, They have no concept of the State Boards. The Senate and
House make the laws, not the boards.

I am sure Karen can add more to this, just basic understanding of
business. An ABC course. Boring and many won't think it is
important, until its time to deal with the Real World. JMHO and I
will stop blah blah blah Now................LOLO diana from indiana

I'm kicking around an idea Ana would like some input please.

What, if any, non-product, non-technique related classes would you be interested in taking or attending at a trade show? Marketing? Motivational? Salon management/hiring/training/writing & developing salon protocols abd policies & procedures? Self-improvement? Or any other topics you think might be worthwhile.

Thank you in advance for your help!
