Distance is a bogus metric, most of the time it's about the loss.
See shrinking link budget for 10km as you go from 1 to 10 to 100G.
100G-LR1 plugs are about 12% more expensive than 100G-FR1, on average, but it
seems old habits die hard :-).
Having an extra dB or two when equinix are messing in the MMR
is worth it. Also one less type to carry spares for.
