is a little flip and not terribly informative, particularly to someone
who has never used a build tool (i.e., the majority of all Microsoft
tools developers). How about leading off with something like this:

  "NAnt is a free .NET build tool. A build tool helps automate
  the process of building complex software projects. NAnt is similar in
  concept to build tools like make and Ant."

Is my version too condescending? I was going for something that says
what a build tool actually is, rather than defining it in terms of other
tools that developers may or may not know about.
Not at all. I've changed it to reflect your suggestion. I appreciate any other comments you have regarding new users to both build tools and open source projects. Thats why I added the cvs question.
