(AP) - Hazing operations so far this year have saved as many as 500 bison that migrated from Yellowstone National Park into Montana, a state official said Monday. Marc Bridges of the Montana Board of Livestock said that total included another 98 bison chased back into the park last Friday, the seventh hazing operation of the fall. Continued hazing operations have "maintained Montana's critical brucellosis-free status and avoided the need to kill any of these disease-exposed bison, in keeping with the terms of the interim bison management agreement adopted by both the state and the National Park Service," said Bridges, acting executive officer and the person in charge of Montana's bison management effort. During the mild weather of last winter, relatively few bison left Yellowstone and only a few were killed or shipped to slaughter. But during the previous winter, about 1,100 Yellowstone bison were killed. Bridges said an estimated 50 percent of Yellowstone's bison carry the disease brucellosis, which causes abortions in cattle and can cause undulant fever in humans. ----end of article----
