Offers care through a network of 49 hospitals, 209 health centers, 121 health stations, 168 village clinics and 34 urban clinics. Provides money for tribes to run their own health systems, if they so desire, through a compact or a more closely managed contract. These are becoming increasingly popular options. For 55 percent of Indians, the service is the sole provider of care. Seventeen percent also have other public coverage such as Medicaid or Medicare. An additional 28 percent have private health insurance. Indian health service facilities can bill private insurance companies and the government when they treat patients who are covered by other insurance programs. Likewise, Indians with other insurance can go outside the Indian Health Service for care -- but often there are no other facilities in the rural areas where many Indians live.
