CHATHAM, ONTARIO - A land claim deal between the federal government and
Caldwell First Nation is angering the band's non-native neighbours in
southwestern Ontario. The deal would give the band $23 million to buy land
on Lake Erie's shore to create a reserve.

People in the area who don't want a reserve brought their concerns
yesterday to visiting Indian Affairs Minister Jane Stewart. Non-native
protesters told CBC News they "don't mind Indians," but a reserve would
lower land values and make the area inaccessible to non-natives.

Chief Larry Johnson disagrees. He says the band intends to farm and
reforest much of the area and wishes the community would realize that.

Stewart says the claim is going ahead as planned. "In Canada, these
aboriginal rights do exists and we have an obligation to make sure that
they are reconciled," Stewart told CBC News.

The Caldwell are a landless band as their chief wasn't present at the
signing of a major treaty in 1790. The agreement gives them 25 years to buy
land from willing sellers. The Caldwell are expected to vote on the deal
this spring.
