A showdown is likely over a Government of Canada decision to approve a
nuclear waste site for the Bruce nuclear power development, saying it
will
have no significant adverse environmental affects. Among those
opposed---the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation.Included in a
comprehensive submission opposing the plan, the First Nation said the
radioactive
materials in the spent fuel can cause cancer and birth defects if
inhaled or ingested, even after thousands of years. The dry storage silos that
Hydro is proposing have a life span of 50 years. There is nothing in Hydro's
Comprehensive Environmental Study that convinces us that radioactive
materials would not leak from the silos if they were damaged by an
earthquake or after an impact with an airplane or truck. As well, the
First Nation concerns included the Hydro proposal fails to acknowledge the
importance of three aboriginal burial sites at the Bruce Nuclear Power
Development--one of them within the perimeter of the proposed dry fuel
storage facility.
