A similar "wake" was held in Seattle the day the Makah harvested their whale=
=2E

The wake was organized by PAWS and attended by animal rights people who
joined hands with ultraright Washington state politician Jack Metcalf, and
a large assortment of anti-Indian whites.

Together these groups raised a huge banner that read: "Harpoon Makahs not
whales!"

Opposite the wake Natives were joined by members of the Freedom Socialist
Party and other Indian rights defenders. They were successful in getting
the hostile banner removed after chanting "Remove your racist banner."
Apparently this shamed enough animal rights people for them take it down,
but only after their "demand" was captured by a news cameras.

=46SP organizer Guerry Hoddersen was quoted in the Seattle Times the next
day. She stated, in effect, she was struck by the deep-going racism that
any assertion of native rights evokes. She said it reminded her of the
response of white bigots to the southern civil rights struggle.

Indeed!
