In recent years, the policies impacting Aboriginal Peoples in Ontario region have been going in the wrong direction. This Vigil is called to give publicity to the changes and new direction which the incoming Ontario government should deliver in order to ensure a good relationship with First Nations in this region and to support First Nations’ efforts to achieve economic self-sufficiency. We must act now, as we are headed towards an Ontario where it will be uncomfortable for both Native and non-Native people to live. The leaders of the three major parties, or their designates, are requested to drop in to open dialogue with Chiefs and other representatives. A press briefing will be held at 11am. Do as the UN and Amnesty International say: Call an Inquiry into Ipperwash now. Put "Lands for Life/Ontario Living Legacy" on hold: negotiate with the NAN. Support the Caldwell First Nation’s right to their territory. Stop Abitibi’s clear-cutting; conduct an environmental assessment at Grassy Narrows. Support fishing and hunting rights of Mètis and First Nations’ citizens. Implement policies respecting nation-to-nation relationships. Strengthen awareness of Aboriginal cultures through education and arts initiatives. Protect the environment. Sponsored by: Nishnawbe-Aski Nation; Caldwell First Nation; Grassy Narrows First Nation; Coalition for a Public Inquiry into the Death of Dudley George; Turtle Island Support Group; and others.
