Mohawks get permission for video slots, give state cut of revenues

ST. REGIS MOHAWK RESERVATION, N.Y. (AP) - New York state will receive a
multimillion dollar cut for allowing the St. Regis Mohawk Nation to have
video slot machines at its new casino, Gov. George Pataki said Thursday.

The agreement is expected to net the state at least $3 million a year. It
potentially could result in a take of $18 million a year or more, depending
on how successful the month-old Akwesasne Mohawk Casino near the Canadian
border becomes.

Despite giving up a share of their profits, the Mohawks hailed the
agreement as a smart business decision.

"We don't see this as a waiver of sovereignty. This is a
government-to-government agreement. If we are making money, we don't mind
sharing it with the state," said Gus McDonald, the administrative aide to
the Mohawk Tribal Council, the nation's elected leaders.

State officials promised that some of the money will find its way back into
the North Country in the way of assistance for local projects, McDonald said.

The Mohawks, meanwhile, expect attendance at the casino to increase
dramatically with the addition of the video lottery terminals, which can
account for up to 65 percent of a casino's revenues, said Alison Calkins, a
casino spokeswoman. Mohawk leaders have projected that the casino will
eventually produce gross earnings of $65 million a year. <<END EXCERPT
