In this May 26 article MSNBC sports anchor, Rob Nikoleski, calls upon
the new owner of the Washington, D.C., NFL team to change the team's
nickname. http://www.msnbc.com/news/273786.asp Remarks may be

You can argue that “Braves” or “Warriors” signifies a measure of
strength, but even the most insensitive of us could not describe
“Redskins” as anything more than what it is — an offensive description
of a proud group of people who were the victims of genocide.

That’s not politically correct thinking. That’s simply the truth.

Snyder has indicated that he has no plans of changing the team’s name.
Perhaps he’s concerned that a switch would imply yielding to outside
pressure. And doubtless, teams like the Cleveland Indians and schools
like the Illinois Fighting Illini are probably feeling some sense of
relief, fearing that if the Redskins bend, the pressure on them will
increase.

In the minds of some, I’m probably a Cro-Magnon for finding no offense
in nicknames like “Braves” and “Warriors.”

But when it comes to “Redskins,” I can’t find a reasonable defense on
any grounds for keeping the name.

Washington’s football team is about to make a new start with a new owner
in a new century. Mr. Snyder, it’s time for a new name too.
