Nez Perce Tribe to vote on constitutional amendments

Proposed amendments to the Nez Perce Tribe's constitution
dealing with voting and office-holding eligibility will be
put to a vote June 5.
The first proposed amendment, would allow all enrolled
members of the Nez Perce Tribe who are 18 or older to vote on
tribal matters, regardless of where they live. The second
proposal would allow all eligible tribal members living in
the 1855 treaty area to run for office on the Nez Perce
Tribal Executive Committee. The constitution has not been
amended since 1963.
The current voting eligibility excludes those members
not living within the reservation boundaries of the 1863
treaty. Those wishing to run for NPTEC offices must also
reside within the 1863 treaty boundaries.
Those wishing to vote on these issues may do so at the
Pi Nee Waus building at Lapwai, the Tribal Fisheries Office
in Orofino or the Wa A Yas building in Kamiah between 8 a.m.
and 8 p.m.
