Hello Ishgooda:

When you have a few minutes, you should watch the .ram file video
newscast connected to the story "Protestors allege system racist ." It sure
isn't hard to see how "media," et al, is throwing the warrior symbol all
over to "psychologically" connect the symbol to "gangs, drugs and guns."
Of course this has been done during Ganienkeh and Oka as well.

Whether charges are valid or not (since they have been unable to even
answer charges), the "intent" to connect the warrior symbol to crime is
clearly evident when one watches the CBC newscast, especially in the
frames showing the alleged confiscated drugs and weapons. Warrior
jackets, t-shirts and hats are "theatrically" arranged among the drugs
and guns laid out on the floor. Additonally, the Manitoba Warriors are
referred to a "gang members." Obvious connotation is that all
"warriors" are "gang members." Again, the criminal implication.

This is the first I have heard of this particular case, but the above
was my immediate reaction: media, et al, ...again shaping public
thought.

WINNIPEG - Dozens of Manitoba Warriors arrested last year and
charged under the federal government's tough new anti-gang
legislation got some support Monday from protesters outside the
               Manitoba law courts.

Because alleged members of the Manitoba Warriors have been
held without bail for so long and have no idea when they'll
get a
trial, the protestors allege the law and the subsequent jail
time
               have racist overtones.

"These guys have been in jail for 207 days. They've been
charged but haven't even been able to answer the charges. They
haven't even set a court date," says Terry Nelson, a native
               activist.

More than two dozen gang members were arrested last
November and charged under a new federal anti-gang law.

The bust netted guns, money, and drug paraphernalia.

But the case is taking some time to get to trial because
Winnipeg is building a brand new high-security court house big
enough to try all 30 gang members at the same time.

Nelson says the anti-gang law is racist because non-native
suspects appear to be treated differently.

"There's Chinese and Filipino crack cocaine dealers that have
been charged. They got bail. That's what we're talking about.
The fact that there's a different application of the
Criminal Code
here on the issue of the Manitoba Warriors," says Nelson.

Last month thirty-six people were arrested for a variety of drug
and weapons offenses. Police seized crack cocaine worth about
               $145,000 dollars on the street.

The Federal Justice Department declined to comment today,
saying it won't speak about any matter that's before the
courts.

But some supporters chose to express their opinions through
graffiti on the walls of the Law Courts and the Remand centre.
Nelson says his group had nothing to do with that but he's ready
to take his complaint to the United Nations next month.
