Letter To the Editor

Madame Director,
We are requesting the publication of the following letter, directed
to: C. Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, President of the Republic; C. Jorge
Madrazo Cuellar, Attorney General of the Republic.

On Tuesday, August 31, individuals identifying themselves as agents of the
Department of Justice of the Republic (PGR), detained, interrogated and
verbally assaulted our companeros, reporters Juan Carlos Herrera Hernandez
- correspondent for the Cuarto Poder newspaper - and Julio Cesar Lopez
Arevalo - correspondent for Proceso magazine - at a checkpoint located on
the Cuxulja-Tzajala stretch of road in the municipality of Ocosingo.

The PGR agents even confiscated the Cuarto Poder correspondent's
credentials. They also threatened to beat up Julio Cesar Lopez and take
his camera.

In the conflict zone, and on multiple occasions, federal authorities have
committed similar outrages against journalists covering the news there
since the emergence of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN),
restricting freedom of movement and expression established in the Mexican
Constitution.

Through this means, we are demanding that this case of harassment - which
is obstructing the work of the press and violating individual rights - be
investigated and punished.

We are also requesting guarantees of security for freedom of movement
throughout the highways of Chiapas and for the carrying out the work of
journalism. Or, failing that, information on, and the reasons for, the
restrictions we are confronting in this region in the performance of our
profession.
