Natives plan forest boycott

By CAM FORTEMS Kamloops Daily News Staff Reporter 9/10/99

Interior natives will organize an international boycott of B.C. forest products if
logging companies do not seek permission to cut on their traditional lands.

About 40 chiefs from the Interior Alliance passed a unanimous resolution in Kamloops
Friday supporting the Westbank Indian Band’s right to log and the beginning of the
boycott.

“We want to talk to groups like Greenpeace and major environmental groups very
quickly,” said Penticton band Chief Stewart Phillip. “There’s also talk about going to
New York and making a presentation to the United Nations.”

Seven bands that make up the Okanagan Nation are backing the Westbank band’s right to
log. Phillip said two camps will be set up Monday where band members are cutting trees
without permits.

One will be used “to observe and monitor the flow of traffic.” The second will be a
larger gathering of supporters.

The province is mulling whether to seek a court injunction to stop the logging that
would be backed up by RCMP.

Phillip said he believes cabinet is divided whether to use force or to come to terms
with the native loggers.

“Certain cabinet ministers want to come in and kick ass. But others recognize it’s a
catalyst to ignite the province and could virtually shut down the industry.”

When asked if a violent confrontation is possible, Stewart said “it’s difficult, if
not impossible, to predict what will happen.”

Interior bands have also promised to send loggers to work alongside Westbank members.

The resolution passed Friday requires forest companies logging on traditional
territories of the five Interior Alliance groups -- Shuswap, Southern Carrier,
Nlaka’pamux, Stl’atl’imx and Okanagan -- to receive written permission from local
bands.
