Sayers re-elected as Garden River chief

Frank Dobrovnik Sault Ste Marie Star 9/10/99

Garden River residents have given chief Lyle Sayers a mandate to lead them into the
new millennium. Sayers was re-elected Friday with 211 votes, compared to 143 for
former chief Dennis Jones.

His second term begins on a stronger note than his first, two years ago, when he
bested Jones by just six votes.

Following the ballot-count late Friday, Sayers said the wide gap represents faith in
the direction he and council have taken the community of approximately 1,950 residents.

"I think people feel we're going in the right direction. My door is always open to the
public for advice and suggestions,'' he said.

"Hopefully over the next two years we can come together and get things done for the
community as a whole,'' he added to a small group of supporters at Garden River's
community centre:

Sayers and the 12-person band council -- of which four are new councillors -- will
meet informally next week to decide what issues to look at in the upcoming term and to
get new members up to speed on issues that have caught the attention of the former
council.

The "number one priority,'' he said, will be the much-delayed four-lane highway link
to be developed just north of the stretch of Highway 17 that runs through the reserve.

The project has been on hold since 1994, when Garden River, the federal Liberals and
the then-NDP provincial government came to an agreement. It appeared back on track
earlier this summer, but has inexplicably been victim to "stalling tactics,''
according to a Sault Star ad taken out by Sayers and council two weeks ago.

A new highway link is expected to improve road safety conditions in Garden River.
Earlier in the summer, residents staged a traffic slowdown to highlight collisions and
fatalities that have occurred through the years because motorists don't heed the
reduced speed limit through 16 kilometres of the reserve.

During the two-week election campaign, Sayers refused to speak of any follow-up
action. But he said Friday that he and council will help come up with a new strategy
"to get the four-laning completed one way or another.''
