     Man dies after RCMP arrest

                      By SUN MEDIA
CALGARY -- The death of a man, who appeared to be drunk but later died in
hospital after his arrest, is under investigation.

RCMP alerted paramedics about the 57-year-old's condition when they noticed something
was wrong with him after arresting him Thursday night on the Siksika reserve east of
Calgary.

"At the detachment he began vomiting, and in the good light officers could see
something about him wasn't right," said RCMP Sgt. Jerry Kopp of the Gleichen
detachment.

He was flown to hospital in Calgary where he died Friday night.

Investigators from the Calgary RCMP major crime unit, Gleichen RCMP and the Siksika
Nation Police Service have been uncovering the last hours of the man's life.

He had been staying at a home on the reserve, said Kopp. On Thursday he'd been
drinking and had fallen on the floor.

"We are working on the assumption the injuries he had received were from a fall in the
home," said Kopp.

An autopsy will be held in Calgary Monday.

Custody death probed

By PETER SMITH -- Calgary Sun The death of a Siksika Reserve Native who'd been in
police custody has sparked a "full investigation" by Calgary RCMP's major crime unit.
The 57-year-old victim, who's not yet been named, died in Foothills Hospital on Friday
after being airlifted there from the Gleichen RCMP detachment by STARS the day before.
Investigators from the major crime unit, Gleichen RCMP and the Siksika Nation Police
Service have been piecing together the last known hours of the man's life. He had been
staying at a home on the reserve for the past few days, said Gleichen RCMP Sgt. Jerry
Kopp. On Thursday, residents at the house called police on an unrelated incident,
which had dissipated by the time officers arrived. "While we were there, the
home-owner asked us to remove the man, fearing he would become a problem because he'd
been drinking so much," said Kopp. Officers then discovered the man had outstanding
warrants against him. An autopsy to be held in Calgary tomorro!
