(AP) -- The new Milton High School mascot with either be the Red Hawks or the Mavericks. High school and middle school students voted Friday for their top two or three choices for a school nickname after the school board retired the Redmen nickname in June because it was thought to be offensive to American Indians. Students could select two of three choices: Red Hawks, Mavericks or Red Storm. Red Hawks received 658 votes, Mavericks garnered 469 and Red Storm earned 358. Students will vote between the Red Hawks and the Mavericks Tuesday for a final vote. Student representatives said Wednesday that many students planned to write in the Redmen nickname, even though the board had said votes for the Redmen would not count in the election. High school Principal Craig Duncan would only say that some students wrote in for the Redmen nickname during Friday' s vote, refusing to say how many had written in for the old name. Middle school students were allowed to vote because they will be in the high school in two years, Duncan said. The Milton change has been promoted since 1990 by Carol Hand, a Lac du Flambeau Chippewa, who said she had to leave town because of harassment.
