The occupation lasted 19 months and reclaimed the island as Indian land. In June of 1971, U.S. Federal Marshals removed the remaining Indian occupants. Today the Occupation stands out as a beacon of pride for Native American people, a symbol of freedom and self-determination, and a rebirth of identity, culture and traditions.
